State Street launched the first ETF in 1993, and its SPDR brand still leans on institutional index expertise rather than retail marketing. In Europe the standouts are the ACWI IMI fund — one line covering developed, emerging and small caps, which no other issuer matches as cleanly — plus a dividend-aristocrat series that is genuinely differentiated rather than a repackaged high-yield screen. Fees on the flagships are competitive; on the niche funds they are not always.
